Father

This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

When his disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, he began with a relatively revolutionary idea – Our Father in heaven. For the most part, Jewish theological thought viewed God as the one whose name should not be spoken and whose presence in the Holy of Holies was as dangerous as it was glorious. He was seen as the Holy Judge of all the earth and the destroyer of the enemies of Israel. He was the thunder and flame on Sinai and the earthquake swallowing up the sons of Korah.

 

But Jesus spoke to the Father in familiar and intimate terms and encouraged every believer to do the same. That must have been a difficult paradigm shift for most. It still is. One of the great hindrances to receiving the promises and the power of the Holy Spirit is our view of God. When we ask God for healing, deliverance, favor, provision, and protection we often ask with a qualified expectation. We hope he will answer our petitions, but many of us have no confidence at all that he will.

 

Many of us have a difficult time believing that our Heavenly Father is willing, able, and eager to bless us, heal us, and deliver us from the power of the enemy. We still view him as a God who keeps careful records and who weighs our good moments against our bad moments to see if we have earned enough points to merit an answered prayer. We see him as a Father whose love is conditional, who is beyond understanding, and who often feels like pain and suffering are ultimately in our best interest. Too often, we simply lay the template of our earthly father over our Heavenly Father and expect the same inconsistencies or even anger.  If you had a great father, your prayers are facilitated by your experience. If you had an angry or absent father, your prayers will be laced with doubt until you truly know your Heavenly Father.

 

So many of us pray, hoping for the best but not really expecting it. Many of us have no problem believing that God will act on behalf of everyone else in the room but struggle to have faith that he will answer ours. We know our imperfections and feel that we don’t meet the standard on God’s measuring stick for answered prayers.

 

When we are sick, we may pray for healing but wonder if God actually wants us to be ill so that our faith in suffering glorifies him, purifies our soul, or has a purpose beyond our understanding. When we live with emotional pain and brokenness from our own bad choices we may see God as the Father who sternly remarks, “You made your bed, now you can lie in it.” Myriads of believers simply view their Heavenly Father as a distant replica of an earthly father who made promises he couldn’t keep, whose primary emotion was anger, whose love was conditional, or who was loving one day while distant and unpredictable the next.

 

When we have a mixed view of our Heavenly Father it is difficult to pray with faith or to pray at all. But prayer is the very thing that opens the valve so that the promises and the power of heaven can flow to us and through us. If we view God as distant, angry, or conditional then we will not pray at all (there’s no point in asking) or we will pray as if we have to convince, coerce, or nag God into blessing us.

 

So how do we understand this God who seems angry and vengeful in the Old Testament but is called “Abba” in the New Testament? John goes so far as to say that God is love and God is light. They key is Jesus. No matter how we understand the Old Testament or what kind of father we had on earth, Jesus clearly stated that he is the way to understand the Father. “Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”(Jn.14:9). The heart of Jesus toward the weak, broken, and shameful is the heart of the Father.

 

If you want to know how much you are loved by the Father, look at the cross. If you want to know how God will deal with your sinful past, look at the Samaritan woman of John 4 and the woman caught in adultery in John 8. Ask yourself how many times Jesus turned down people who came to him for healing and how he dealt with Peter after Peter denied him three times and abandoned Jesus in his hour of suffering.

 

According to Hebrews, Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory (the part of God’s goodness we can see) and the exact representation of the Father’s being (Heb. 1:3). When you see the heart of Jesus toward the broken and the suffering you see the heart of the Father. When you see the compassion of Christ toward the spiritually clueless you see the Father. When you see the anger and frustration of Jesus toward those who would deny the healing of God for the sick or who would drive sinners away rather than embrace them, you have seen the Father as well. The cross has allowed the love of God to overpower the judgment of God. And God is glad.

 

When you pray for the power of heaven to be released on your behalf, remember that the heart of the Father toward you is the same as the heart of Jesus. As loving fathers and mothers, we are not always so different from our heavenly Father. I always want the best for my children. When they were young and tumbled off their bikes, I ran to pick them up and bandaged their wounds. When they were afraid I comforted them. When they were confused I taught them. When they were in danger I protected them. When they laughed I laughed with them and when they did wrong I corrected them. All those things were motivated by love and, like most parents, I would have died to save my children.

 

Our heavenly Father did just that and is much more the loving Father and Mother than we could ever hope to be. When you pray, you can be certain that your Father in heaven is hearing and acting on your behalf. We can’t always know why we have yet to see some prayers answered. There are mysteries yet to be understood. But we can always know the heart of our Heavenly Father toward us. If you have seen Jesus, you have seen the Father. If you have seen the cross you have seen his heart for you. And in this Easter season, you see your absolute hope in an empty tomb. All from the Father for you. Blessings today in Him.

 

 

In my last blog I quoted extensively from Dr. Caroline Leaf’s recent book, Switch On Your Brain (Baker Books), from a chapter in which she talked about the myth of genetic determinism in our choices. In another section, she raised an interesting question about the intergenerational dysfunctions (or sin) in families.

 

There has always been a challenging scripture in Exodus that this may speak to. “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Ex.20:5-6, emphasis added).

 

I have always puzzled somewhat about the meaning of “punishing the children to third and fourth generation” – especially when God says in another place, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him…The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son” (Ezek.18:18-20). So…in light of this passage what does Exodus 20 mean?

 

I have always understood Exodus 20 to mean that the consequences of the Father’s sins will effect the children through four generations if they are not dealt with spiritually. For instance, unrepented sin by a father (especially idolatry) might give Satan a legal right to afflict a family and that right will continue through four generations unless it is dealt with by the children acknowledging and renouncing those sins and serving God. Also, we know that unrepented sins establish behavioral patterns in families that can be passed on from generation to generation.

 

In her recent book, Dr. Leaf says, “Science has demonstrated how the thought networks pass through the sperm and the ova via DNA to the next four generations” (p.57). That got my attention. She went on to describe the scientific explanation for that but essentially science is discovering that the thought patterns we choose to follow are written in our very DNA like a program on a computer chip. Those may be uploaded into the mind of the next four generations as genetic tendencies or predispositions that can be turned on and become operative if the mind of that generation comes into agreement with the predisposition. Leaf says, “the sins of the parents create a predisposition not a destiny” (p.59). Free will is always at play.

 

That agreement turns on the program and so the program may be duplicated, along with the consequences, generation after generation. That “genetic expression” can pass on, at a DNA level, both positive and negative results. However our mind (thought patterns that we choose) can turn on that genetic tendency or turn it off. We have power over the genes, not the genes over us. She sums it up this way, “Our choices (the epigenetic signals) alter the expression of genes (the epigenetic markers) which can then be passed on to our children and grandchildren, ready to predispose them before they are even conceived. So our bad choices become their predispositions.”

 

This reality does not negate the spiritual dimension but adds a dimension to it and gives us even more reason to make good choices – not just for us but also for generations to come. This presents an additional dimension of cursing ourselves and our children when we ignore the truths of God’s word about guarding our hearts, taking every thought captive to Christ, and being those who speak blessings rather than curses. The thought patterns we choose that are contrary to the word of God get written into our very DNA and effect us spiritually, emotionally and physically in very negative ways. Aligning our thoughts and words to God’s truth, however, writes blessings into our very DNA and can be passed on to generations. Think and speak the good things of God today.

 

 

 

In the third chapter of Joshua, Israel prepares for an event forty years in the making…the crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land.  Forty years earlier, the generation that Moses had led out of Egypt had come to the brink of the Jordan only to have their faith fail and to be consigned to wandering and dying in the wilderness until a generation of faith could be raised up.  As this generation of Hebrews prepared to cross the river we need to remember that the same enemy and the same obstacles awaited them that their parents had found too daunting.

 

Somehow, after forty years of living in the desert where they had been forced to depend on God for daily bread and water, where they had witnessed his presence above the tent of meeting, where they had heard the stories of God’s deliverance from Egypt, and perhaps where they had listened to the repentant hearts of parents who wished their faith had been sufficient, this generation was ready to cross.   They were also ready to see God’s supernatural interventions on their behalf without the presence of their parents and grandparents and without the presence of Moses.

 

For this generation there had to be some question about God’s willingness to act on their behalf.  They had experienced Manna each morning but miracles that occur everyday, year after year tend to feel less miraculous.  They had not personally witnessed the plagues on Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, or the destruction of Pharaoh’s army or, if they had seen those things they were very young and the memories were distant.  Was Jehovah only the God of their parents or the God of Moses?  Would he act in such amazing and powerful ways for them?  They were about to find out.

 

Their orders were clear.  “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5).  So Israel prepared to move and to possess what had been promised to Abraham hundreds of years earlier and what had been within the reach of their elders forty years earlier.  The orders were to pack up and prepare to leave.  The priests would carry the Ark of the Covenant ahead of the people and the people would follow.  The ark, of course, represented the presence of God and so God would go before them.

 

Only one thing stood in the way of a million-plus Hebrews that morning and it was the Jordan River at flood stage.  So awesome was the presence of God that God directed the people to keep a distance of about a thousand yards between them and the ark as they crossed. The command was for a crew of Levites to carry the ark on their shoulders by means of poles that were slipped through rings attached to the ark.  We aren’t told how these Levites were selected.  It was probably both a privilege and a terrifying prospect for those men.  They were commanded to carry the ark into the River and as they stepped into the water they were promised that God would stop the flow of millions of gallons a minute coming at them. The river was swift, the water was deep, and the banks were steep.  What would happen if they stumbled and dropped the ark?  What would happen if they stepped into a deep pool and the river continued to flow? What would happen?

 

What happened was obedience.  The people prepared.  They broke camp, lined up, and followed the ark towards the river.  They held their breath as the Levites carrying the golden chest containing the stone tablets, the rod of Aaron, and a pot of manna stepped into the Jordan.  My guess is that they shouted as the water ceased to flow and dry ground appeared.  The Levites stood in the middle of the dry riverbed while the entire nation of Israel crossed over into the land of Canaan.  We are told that the water simply piled up upstream.  As Israel crossed, the presence of God continued to stand between them and destruction keeping the waters pushed back. We don’t know how long it took for the nation to cross but it was certainly hours not minutes that God held back the Jordon.

 

Finally, when all had crossed stones were removed from the middle of the riverbed and stacked as a testimony to what God had done.  The Levites stepped out of the riverbed with the ark and the river began to flow again. This newest generation had their own miracle – their own Red Sea crossing of you will  – and every Hebrew that touched the dry riverbed had personally experienced the miracle.  That miracle increased their faith and planted fear the in the hearts of those who lived in Jericho for they had also watched to see if their gods or Israel’s God was greater.

 

I believe that every generation of God’s people needs its own miracles to step into that generation’s destiny.  The American church, by and large, has offered the miracles of the church 2000 years ago and has said that those miracles are sufficient for our faith.  Perhaps, but the miracles leading the Hebrews out of Egypt were not sufficient for the next generation.  God could have simply sent a drought to turn the Jordan into a trickle and the nation could have easily crossed without the Levites stepping into a swirling river.  But God chose flood stage and a clear and powerful miracle to set the stage for their destiny.  I believe God wants to do the same for every generation so that it can fulfill all that God has called it to accomplish.

 

We cannot do things worthy of God in our own strength and there is no clear testimony of God without miracles.  I’m always amazed at how much resistance there is in some sections of the church to the miraculous moves of God. I believe every generation should have its own undeniable miracles so that “stones” from that generation can be set up as a testimony to the greatness and faithfulness of God as an encouragement to the next generation to believe God for their miracles. Whatever river you are facing, I hope you will ask God for a powerful and n undeniable miracle to get you to the other side and when you get there, be sure to give your testimony of what he has done for you.  Be blessed today and expect miracles.

 

 

Have you ever considered all the moments when God said to someone, “Don’t be afraid.”  Sometimes, God spoke those words and at other times his messenger spoke the words.  By “messenger” I mean angels, prophets, or the Son himself.  At the same time, we find dozens of passages that command us to fear God.

 

If I were to summarize all those passages I might say:  If you fear God you don’t have to be afraid of God and if you don’t have to be afraid of God you don’t have to be afraid of  anyone else.

 

Let me explain.  Solomon said that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (See Prov. 1:7).  A proper view of God as the sovereign Lord over all creation, holy, righteous in all he does, all powerful, all present and all knowing is the first step to a relationship with him.  To hold him in awesome respect as the judge of all the earth holds everything else in place.  Our first response to God should be the same as Isaiah’s response when he saw the Lord high and lifted up and seated on his throne – “Woe is me!” (Isa.6:1ff).  As great a prophet as Isaiah was his sense of sin and weakness in the presence of God’s majesty, justice, and holiness was overwhelming. That view of God keeps us honest and keeps us from abusing God’s grace and love.

 

Let’s be honest. Somewhere in our fallen nature is the capacity to take advantage of those who love us unconditionally and lavishly.  In response to that capacity, Paul asked the rhetorical question, “Should we sin all the more that grace may abound?”  In other words, should we sin intentionally and often and simply seek our own gratification because God is gracious and forgiving? The answer is no of course but a view of God that simply acknowledges his graciousness, long-suffering, and forgiving side places us on a track to abuse the relationship.

 

God offers us an intimate, Father/son or Father/daughter relationship in which we can be secure and come boldly before his throne seeking help. He has offered us friendship, forgiveness, patience and grace.  However, he can offer us that side of the relationship only as long as we remember who he is.  I have seen fathers who have become friends with their children in the sense that they played, teased, and laughed with their children.  I have also seen those children begin to abuse that familiarity and speak with a lack of respect or act as if they no longer needed to obey that father.  They confused his kindness and his willingness to communicate on their level with equality.  In those cases, the father was quick to remind them that he was still the father and the one in charge.

 

If we never forget that our Heavenly Father is still God Almighty, Creator, and Judge then he can extend to us familiarity (Abba Father) and even friendship because we won’t become careless with the relationship or take advantage of his love and kindness. If we fear God then we don’t have to be afraid of him.  When you consider Abraham, Isaiah, Moses and others to whom he said, “Don’t be afraid,” it is clear that they held an awesome respect and reverence for God.  Therefore, he could call them friends, welcome them into his throne room, and extend forgiveness when needed because the relationship stood on the healthy foundation of fear.

 

When we fear God we don’t have to be afraid of him because we have love and friendship as a bond.  When the one who loves you and counts you as a friend is the most powerful being in the universe then you have not need to fear anyone else.  God has your back and if God is for you who can stand against you?   I know there is tension between familiarity, comfort, friendship and the fear of God.  That tension is not contradictory but keeps us in balance between two extremes so that our relationship with the Father can flourish.  Meditating on his greatness and holiness as well and his grace and kindness is a healthy thing.  You may want to do that today and be blessed.
