Your Kingdom

For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:30-34

 

In the gospel of Luke, Jesus has just spoken about the human tendency to worry and fret over what tomorrow may bring. He responded with the truth that if God cares for flowers and birds, how much more will he care for his own children. In the middle of his response, he makes a very significant statement that most of us have not yet fully grasped – Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. What did Jesus mean when he said that God has given us the kingdom?

 

Before commenting on that, I want to review a prophetic text from the Book of Daniel. Daniel had received a powerful vision and had asked for the interpretation of what he was shown.

 

In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Daniel 7:13-14

 

This prophetic passage foresees Jesus coming in clouds, entering the throne room of the Father, and receiving authority, glory, power, and dominion. In Matthew 28:18, after his resurrection, Jesus declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me.” A few years later, Paul declared that Jesus had been given a name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” “Phil. 2:9-11).   Daniel’s vision was fulfilled when Christ ascended to the Father after his resurrection and sat down at the right hand of the Father. But there’s more. Going back to Daniel we are told:

 

“I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. “So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: ‘The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.    But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.” Daniel 7:15-18

 

In the days of Daniel, not only was it prophesied that Jesus would be made King of Kings and Lord of Lords in the courts of heaven, but that the saints (followers of Jesus – you and me) would be given the kingdom as well. That is what Jesus referenced in Luke 12.

 

To be given the kingdom means that we have been given all the blessings of the kingdom and the resources of that kingdom have been made available to us. That is why Jesus encouraged us not to worry because even when we give everything away, the storehouses of heaven are always full and their contents will be made available to God’s children. The first time Jesus sent out his twelve apostles to preach and heal, he instructed them not to take any money, shoes, luggage, or extra clothes. They needed to learn that the kingdom belonged to them and therefore they could anticipate with confidence that God would always meet their needs in supernatural ways. Jesus fully understood that principle so when he was faced with feeding 5000 men plus women and children with a few fish and a handful of bread, he had no worries. He prayed, thanked the Father for the resources he could draw on and watched the Father multiply the food so that twelve basketfuls were left over. Not just enough, but more than enough.

 

If you are a follower of Jesus, the kingdom has been given to you. You didn‘t have to nag, plead, or cajole the Father to get your inheritance. Jesus said that the Father was pleased to give the kingdom to you. If he is pleased to give it, then he is pleased for us to use the resources stored there for the purposes of the kingdom. Money is there, clothing is there, salvation is there, food is there, healing is there, peace is there, jobs are there, and even power is there. It all belongs to you because God has given you the kingdom. ;/

 

When Jesus was about to feed the 5000, Matthew says that he simply looked up to heaven, gave thanks, and broke the loaves. Notice that Jesus did not bow down and beg God for a miracle. Instead he gave thanks for the provision that was already his to use and then as acted on the expectation that his Father was pleased to meet the need. He is our model.

 

When we pray, we should not pray as if we must beg or talk God into meeting a need, but rather give thanks that the resources of heaven are already ours to use. So…the next time a bank officer asks you to list your assets, simply add The Kingdom of Heaven to your list! Be blessed and know that the Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.  And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:12-16

 

In the second chapter of Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth, he spends a great deal of times underlining our essential need for the Holy Spirit. He begins the chapter recounting the decision he made after his disappointing stint in Athens (see Acts 17). While in Athens, Paul had rolled out his most eloquent arguments and debated with the philosophers on Mars Hill with little response. I’m certain that he spent a number of hours in soul searching and asking the Spirit why his strategy had so little effect. When he came to Corinth he had settled on an entirely different approach. “When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom, as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God…my message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom but on God’s power” (1 Cor. 2:1-5).

 

In his two letters to the church at Corinth, he speaks of power at least 25 times. He always relates power to the Holy Spirit as did Jesus, who had instructed the first disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from the Holy Spirit.

 

There are numerous ways in which the Spirit enables us to serve God. In this text, Paul emphasizes our ability to comprehend God and his ways. First of all, he says, the Spirit gives us understanding. Paul had a miserable experience trying to reason with the “wise men” of Athens. Ultimately, what he was telling them made no sense to their intellectual leanings. Paul begins the section I quoted at the beginning of this blog by telling us that God gave us his Spirit so that we could understand the things God has given us. Spiritual understanding is critical to faith and without the Spirit, there is no spiritual understanding.

 

For those of us who believe, we often marvel that some of the brightest minds of our time consider the complexities of the universe and still walk away as atheists. Paul, who was a brilliant scholar himself, said, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14). The word translated as “discerned” here means to make an appraisal, a judgment, or a right evaluation of something. In other words, without the Spirit of God in us, we cannot evaluate or judge truth accurately. So…don’t be surprised that university professors ridicule our faith.

 

It is not that spiritual things are not logical; it is just that spiritual logic is not the same as natural logic. When I was first studying to be a minister in a fellowship that did not accept the present- day ministry of the Holy Spirit, I was surrounded by very bright men who studied the scriptures daily. However, in an attempt to understand difficult passages, they applied Aristotelian logic to the scriptures. Their conclusions were inevitably legalistic. Think about it. They applied reasoning processes developed by pagan philosophers and applied them to truths of the Spirit and, I believe, consistently came away with false conclusions. If you don’t have the Spirit or don’t listen to the Spirit you cannot understand spiritual things. Spiritual logic turns natural logic on its head – the first shall be last, the least shall be greatest, the save your life you must lose it, and so on. To the man without the Spirit, those things sound naïve and foolish. To us they are cornerstone truths in the kingdom of God.

 

As Paul considered that truth, he put away his eloquent outlines that appealed to man’s wisdom and, instead, preached a simple gospel followed by demonstrations of the Spirit’s power. One of the great values of power in evangelism is that the power of the Spirit upsets the natural man’s paradigm – his way of understanding the world. When the rational or scientific man encounters the power of God in prophecy, healing, deliverance, raising the dead, walking on water, etc. his mindset cannot explain adequately what has happened and he experiences a paradigm shift – an openness to knew possibilities. Paul experienced that shift on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians while he was still known as Saul of Tarsus.

 

Even as Christians, I believe we have missed part of the implications of what Paul has told us in this text. The amazing truth he gives us is that we have the mind of Christ – the mind through which the universe was created. Too often, we limit spiritual understanding to theology rather than all understanding that comes from the mind of Christ. What if we believed that the cure to cancer was available to us because we are tapped into the mind of Christ who understands perfectly everything from the forces that created the universe to sub-atomic physics as well as the cellular structure and genetics of the human body? God cares about our health as well as our salvation. He cares about the suffering of men in this world as well as the world to come. Jesus said that his Spirit would lead us into all truth. We should be teaching ourselves and our children to ask God for spiritually creative pathways for music, art, literature, media, and architecture along with heavenly solutions to disease, world hunger, poverty, energy, and pollution. By restricting God’s truth to theology only, we have, in all likelihood, robbed the world of uncounted blessings.

 

The Holy Spirit is a game changer that opens us up to the very mind and heart of God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things. His presence and power sets us apart from all people on earth. While some churches discourage any pursuit of the Holy Spirit and his power, we should be pursuing Him and all that He has with all of our hearts. It is the Spirit who gives us understanding and then empowers us to activate that understanding with the same power that raised Jesus from the grave. What a gift and what a privilege for those who believe in the Risen Lord. Make the most of his Spirit living in you today! Ask Him for answers to everything.

 

 

On the eve of Israel taking possession of the promised land, twelve spies were sent into Canaan to gather intel on the enemy. When they returned, ten of the twelve brought the following report: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan. Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”     But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud (Num.13:27-14:1).

 

The fear of ten men kept an entire nation and an entire generation from entering the inheritance God had given to them. Surely, Pharaoh and the Egyptian machine of conquest and enslavement had seemed impossible to overcome, but God had brought them out with miraculous plagues. Immediately they had crossed the Red Sea on dry ground and seen the Egyptian army swept away by water. God had fed them and provided water in an impossible dessert. He had shaken Mount Sinai and given them the Commandments. Israel had done none of those things in their own strength. God had done it all. But, within a few weeks of the Red Sea crossing, no faith could be found in those ten men.

 

Check their focus. Their view was only on the natural and their assessment was based only on their own strength and resources. In their own strength, they could not overcome such an enemy with such great cities and, in their minds, God was never part of the equation. They acknowledged that God’s description of the land was accurate – a land flowing with milk and honey – but somehow, they did not envision him leading them to victories as he had done only weeks earlier.   In the mind of Caleb and Joshua, God was the primary part of the equation. The only other part was whether God delighted in them or not and that depended on their faithfulness.

 

I like what Graham Cooke has to say about the question of whether God will be with us or not. He says, “Joshua and Caleb manifested what God had put in them: courage and faith. They knew everything came down to one simple issue – “If the Lord delights in us.” That was the question they wrestled with. Is God pleased with us or not? If He is, nothing can stop us. I can answer that question for every believer. He is. God is very pleased with each and every one of us. Why? Because He only sees us in Jesus. He cannot see us separate from his Son. Why wouldn’t he be pleased with you?” (Graham Cooke, Manifesting Your Spirit, p.73; Brilliant Book House).

 

Of course, our flesh can come up with a dozen reasons that God would not be pleased with us and in that perspective our heart fails like the ten spies. We know our sins, our dark thoughts, and the weaknesses that we despise. We assume the Lord despises us because of those things and so we assume he will not go with us into battle. Whether we are battling enemies, poverty, disease, addictions, or loneliness, when we look at our condition and resources rather than the heart of God and his resources, fear will win the day.

 

John tells us “if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin” (1 Jn.1:7). Walking in the light does not mean sinlessness because in his letter, John is clear that we all sin. The idea is that as long as our face is turned toward God and we are moving in his direction – regardless of how slow the progress – then we are still in fellowship and the blood of Jesus covers our sin.

 

In the temple, the ark of covenant was the centerpiece of all things. It contained the Testimony or the Law of God, a golden pot of manna, and Aaron’s rod that had bloomed confirming his priesthood. On the top of the ark were two golden cherubim surrounding the mercy seat, which represented the throne of God. Cherubim are fierce angels that are equivalent to the palace guard. Their job is to keep any enemy and any offense from the presence of the King. As they stretched out their wings over the ark, it was as if they gazed upon the Law inside of the ark so that anyone who had violated the law would be condemned and kept from God’s presence. On the Day of Atonement, however, the high priest carried sacrificial blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the ark. The symbolism, which pointed to Jesus, was that The Law was covered by the blood and it’s condemnation silenced. The cherubim could not see The Law for the blood. Any man represented by the blood could then continue in fellowship with the Lord.

 

As long as any believer still has his face or his heart pointed toward God, the blood keeps him in a state of perpetual purity. Therefore, God only sees the righteousness of Jesus when he looks at his children and, therefore, delights he in us. Because he delights in us, he is with us and will give us the victory. Like the ten spies, condemning, unbelieving, and critical voices can drown out our faith. Under the influence of those voices, we focus on ourselves and not the Lord and, by doing so, fail to enter his promises for us. He doesn’t keep us out; we simply won’t go in. The giants that we imagine and fear when we assess our own strength are like grasshoppers in the eyes of our Father – bugs to be stepped on.

 

As believers, we need to be aware of the voices we listen to. Fear and unbelief can be contagious. Find a few who are full of faith and focused on the Lord. They are the exceptions, so spend time with the exceptions not the crowd. Make sure you speak in faith and anticipation because of who God is, not because of who you are – except for who you are in Christ.

 

If the flesh does not agree with your declarations of faith and the goodness of God, don’t feel like a hypocrite. Paul himself experienced the conflict between his natural man and his spiritual man (Rom.7). Be led by your spiritual man and don’t count the natural man as who you are. Choose to focus on the character and capacity of God and you will not fall short of his promises. Faith is a gift and we need to guard it. We must watch our own words, our own reports and be aware of those being spoken around us. Seek out environments of faith and expectation, not doubt and unbelief. “For without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb.11:6).

 

 

 

I’ve been teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven lately. It is a central concept in the New Testament but I believe it is a very misunderstood concept among most Christians today. As you begin to browse the gospels, the Kingdom of Heaven (synonymous with the Kingdom of God) is introduced very early. It is the central theme in both the preaching of John the Baptist as well as the teaching of Jesus. “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near” (Mt.3:1-2) and, “From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near’” (Mt. 4:17). All in all, the phrases kingdom of heaven and kingdom of God show up in the New Testament about a hundred times.

 

During the period that Jesus continued to roam the earth after his resurrection, we are told, “After his suffering he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3). Jesus began and ended his public ministry declaring that the Kingdom of God had come to earth.

 

Most believers think about the kingdom of heaven or the kingdom of God as something the faithful will experience after the funeral. In their minds it is a very abstract concept, out there somewhere, with little relevance to our lives on planet earth. But both John the Baptist and Jesus declared that the kingdom of heaven was near. They did not mean that it was coming soon but rather that it was within reach of those who believe. They were teaching that by faith, a man might just reach out and take hold of the kingdom. Jesus clearly taught that there was a concrete expression of the kingdom of heaven on the earth available to those who had faith to grasp it. To doubting Jews, Jesus said, “But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you (Lk.11:20).

 

The first thing we need to understand is that the kingdom of God is a kingdom of power. Paul put it this way. “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power” (1 Cor.4:20). We can understand from Paul’s statement that the kingdom includes an expression of heavenly power on the earth – supernatural power. Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” A strict definition of the coming of God’s kingdom on the earth is the will of God being done on earth just as it is in heaven. Whenever Jesus or those who followed him preached the kingdom, they followed with a demonstration of the kingdom of God on earth – healings, deliverance, resurrections, miracles, etc.

 

There is no sickness in heaven because perfect health is God’s will for his children. Healing on earth is an extension of God’s will from heaven to earth. There is no demonic oppression in heaven for God’s will prohibits the presence of the enemy there. Deliverance is a concrete extension of God’s heavenly will on the earth. Love is the atmosphere of heaven. On the earth, the Spirit of God enables believers to love one another as Christ loves us and even to love our enemies. The kingdom of God on earth is the manifestation on earth of the same things that God desires for his children in heaven.

 

Jesus drew on the power and provision of heaven so that God’s will could be expressed on the dusty roads and hillsides of Palestine. That power is made available to those who believe and through those who believe. Paul made this power a point of prayer for the church at Ephesus. “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead…(Eph.1:18-20). That power is for us and works within us. Paul also said, “To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me” (Col.1:29).

 

The good news of the kingdom of God is that the power, provision, protection, and atmosphere of heaven can be displayed on the earth through God’s people whose primary citizenship was transferred from earth to heaven when they were born again and added to the family of God. In Philippians 3:20, Paul declares that our citizenship is in heaven (now) and in another place declares that we are currently seated with Christ in heavenly realms (Eph.2:6). As believers, our reference point for life should not be the earthly, natural realm but the heavenly realm as members of the kingdom of heaven.

 

Jesus had mastery over disease, demons, storms, loaves and fishes, and even death because he lived as a citizen of heaven, representing God’s glory and will on the earth. Many of us live as if there is no power in our faith. We live as if we must simply survive until the return of Jesus. But we are commanded to go into all the world and make disciples of nations before the return of the Lord. If we have been taught to pray, “Thy kingdom come, they will be done on earth…” then God wants his will done here and now, not later. Jesus established the Kingdom on earth and then gave us the mission of expanding that kingdom as we push back the borders of the enemy.

 

That expansion of the kingdom takes power, supernatural power to overcome the strongholds of the enemy. The gospel of Jesus Christ is that through his death, burial, and resurrection he has once again launched the kingdom of heaven on earth and has ransomed us so that we are participants in that kingdom. If we believe that, it changes everything.

 

If I believe in my heart that the kingdom has come in concrete ways and that I am a citizen of heaven, then I know that the resources of heaven are available to me so that I might complete his mission. When crisis comes, I no longer draw on my weakness, but God’s strength. When provision is needed, I no longer consider my lack but God’s abundance. When tragedy arises, I no longer look at my brokenness but God’s enabling grace. There is no lack in heaven, no weakness in heaven, and no one ever feels overwhelmed there. God’s presence makes the difference and his presence is in us. When I know that, and face every situation from my seat in heaven rather than from my inadequacy on the earth, life changes. It is the remedy to fear, depression, lack, insignificance and the rest of what ails us all. Welcome to the kingdom!

 

What is the purpose of the church on earth? Why did God establish an organic body of believers with orders to meet together, encourage one another, forgive one another, pray for one another, equip one another, resource one another, and to submit to one another? We can say with certainty that the two clear, overarching commands for the church are to love one another as He loves us and to go and make disciples of all nations. We can also say that we, as God’s people, are to release heaven on earth as we teach people to obey the will of God – thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

 

One key to understanding our overall purpose is to go back to the beginning to see God’s initial purpose for his people on earth. “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground’” (Gen.1:28). To subdue the earth means to exercise authority over it – to rule over it. I believe, in the context of Genesis 1 and 2, that God is meeting with Adam and Eve in the garden not only to build a relationship but also to groom them to rule over the earth just as he would rule over it.

 

Speaking of man, David said, “You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet” (Ps.8:5-6). Again, crowned and ruler are the operative words here. God placed Adam and Eve on the earth to rule over this planet in his place – to establish the culture of heaven and the will of God on this planet. Of course, Adam sinned and relinquished his authority over the planet to Satan who then became the “prince of this world.” Jesus describes Satan with that phrase three times in the gospel of John (12:31, 14:30. 16:11). But Jesus also declared that Satan, as the prince of this world, stood condemned and judged by His perfect life, sacrifice, and resurrection. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus took back all authority in heaven and on earth and, just as his Father had done, he gave that authority to men to rule the earth once again as his representatives.

 

The general purpose of the church is to rule over the earth once more as representatives of the King and re-establish his kingdom on this planet. We are not to rule with brute force but by capturing the hearts of men. As Adam was directed to subdue the earth, we are directed to subdue nations by preaching the gospel. Our mission is to empty the kingdom of darkness of its residents and fill the kingdom of heaven with those same residents who have accepted the rule of Jesus in their hearts. We are to make disciples of all nations.

 

I like what Kris Vallotton has to say about this ruling church. After quoting Isaiah 2:2-4, he states, “Mountains are the prophet’s metaphors for authorities and the house of the Lord is the church. Isaiah is saying that in the last days the Church will be the chief authority on how to live life and make decisions. This will result in nations coming to us and learning God’s ways, much like the Queen of Sheba did in Solomon’s day. Weapons plants will be converted into grain silos, automobile manufacturing plants, and other beneficial resources, because the nations won’t be fighting each other any more. The fact that the Church has been restored to man’s original position of dominion on earth requires us to learn and carry out the responsibilities that come with our authority” (The Supernatural Ways of Royalty, p. 179-180).

 

I am convinced that the church cannot fill that role in its present condition. I assume our church is representative of most evangelical churches in America as far as our membership goes. This past weekend we had another addition of Freedom Weekend, which is an experiential day of emotional healing and deliverance. Ninety-one men and women of various faith backgrounds went through the weekend after an eight-week study about who they are in Christ and the transformative power of God. On Saturday we met for worship, healing and deliverance. On Sunday morning we all met again to hear what God had done for his people.

 

Person after person testified of significant healing (emotional and physical) and the incredible weight that had been lifted from their lives through deliverance in the name of Jesus. Frowns had given way to smiles, fear had given way to boldness, and dread had given way to faith-filled optimism. These men and women were ready to tell people what Jesus had done for them and to passionately push back on the kingdom of darkness. They were finally ready to rule and reign in the name of Jesus.

 

Until they had experienced the power of God in their lives, they were not ready at all. Until then they were weighed down with unworthiness, guilt, sorrow, fear, lust, condemnation and bitterness. No one can rule or represent Jesus effectively in that condition. If you were to survey the church at large, however, and get an honest report, you would find that the majority of believers are still bound up in brokenness and shame. As Bill Johnson says, “A gospel without power is no gospel at all.” If it saves me from the legal guilt of my sin, but does not actually set me free, I have not experienced the fullness of the gospel.

 

The good news is that the church is growing in the area of power. His people are looking for more and are willing to search for it in different places. Many are finding it. Power, by itself, is not the issue. Fully experiencing Jesus is the issue and until you experience his power you haven’t fully experienced him. Without power, Jesus would have been known as a great teacher, but would never have been known as the Son of God. If you are hungering for more, in your walk with Jesus, I hope you will pursue it until you find it as well. Our heavenly Father is always glad to feed the hungry and he wants you to be fully equipped to be his ambassador on this planet until he returns.

 

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Eph.1:18-19)

The importance of the seventy-two disciples that Jesus sent out in the gospel of Luke cannot be overstated. It is their testimony that opens the door for all believers to do what Jesus did. They were the first, beyond the apostles, to minister in the power and authority of Jesus.

 

Many Christians are still being taught that the miracles of the New Testament were confined to Jesus and his twelve apostles as confirmation of Christ’s deity and of the apostle’s inspiration and authority for writing the New Testament. The argument goes that once Jesus and the apostles were confirmed by signs and wonders, there was no need for miracles and so the age of miracles faded away. This is not an old argument but one that still carries great weight in many evangelical churches and seminaries.

 

In Luke 9, Jesus sent out his twelve apostles on a mission. Luke tells us that Jesus gave the twelve power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases while they preached the kingdom of God. This fits the “confirmation theory” for these twelve men would be given leadership over the church that would be birthed at Pentecost and would write much of the New Testament. However, one (Judas) fell away and most of the New Testament was not written by one of the twelve apostles at all: the gospel of Luke, the book of Acts, the epistle of James (written by the Lord’s brother who was not a follower until after the resurrection), Hebrews, Jude, and all of the letters written by Paul. Paul was an apostle, but was not one of the original twelve.

 

In Luke 10, Jesus appointed seventy-two, no-name disciples and sent them out to preach in towns where Jesus was about to go. This “advance team” was not just putting up posters announcing upcoming healing services. In his directives to the team, Jesus said, “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you’” (Lk.10:8-9). When the advance team returned, the text says, “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!” Jesus replied, “ I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the enemy: nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that spirits submit to you but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Lk. 10:18-20).

 

Jesus had given the same power and authority to the seventy-two, non-apostles that he had given to the twelve so that each of them could preach the kingdom of God and then demonstrate it. At the end of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus commissioned his church to go into all of the world and preach the gospel, making disciples of all nations. He began “the Great Commission” by emphasizing his authority. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me” (Mt.28:18). He ends the commission by declaring that he will be with his disciples always – to the very end of the age. If Jesus is with is and he has all authority, then his authority is with us as well.

 

Paul sums up the issue when he declares, “For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power” (1 Cor.4:20). Any gospel that does not convey not only forgiveness but also power is not the gospel Jesus preached, nor the twelve, nor the seventy-two, nor Paul.

 

Power comes through the Holy Spirit whom Jesus has sent to every believer. He equips us for ministry as Jesus modeled it. In fact, the disciples of Jesus had received the Spirit before Pentecost. In John 20, Jesus appeared to the disciples (not just the apostles) and said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn.20:21-22). But a few days later, he told the same group to wait in Jerusalem until they were further equipped for the mission he had given them. “Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift my Father promised…in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:4-8).

 

Luke is clear that the power of the Spirit did not just fall on the twelve, but on all the believers who were gathered in Jerusalem – about 120 of them (Acts1:15). This entire group had begun to meet together in Jerusalem for prayer (Acts 1:14) and was still together on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit appeared like fire and rested on each of them (Acts 2:1-3). They all were filled with the Spirit and began to speak in tongues (Acts 2:4). From that point on, the church began to move in power through the authority of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, manifested in spiritual gifts.

 

When Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you,” he implied that we should do the things that he had done – preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, and cleanse lepers. He highlighted this future ministry of the church when he said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father” (Jn.14:12). “Anyone” takes it out of the hands of a few and grants that potential to every believer since the days of Jesus.

 

The present day evidence that Jesus rose from the grave and ascended to the Father is found in the power of the Holy Spirit expressed through spiritual gifts in the church. Jesus kept telling his followers that when he took his place by the Father’s side, he would send the Spirit who then would give us power for ministry (See Jn.14 and 16). Power confirms the presence of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the Holy Spirit confirms the presence of Jesus at the right hand of the Father. No power, no confirmation.

 

The need for power in the church is greater today than ever. The world is in bondage to sin and to Satan. The Jews have the Torah, the Muslims have the Koran, and we have the New Testament which testifies of Christ. Stories about what happened two thousand years ago are not convincing to those who study from another book. However, when the works of Jesus are done today in the name of Jesus, Jews and Muslims are convinced as well as pagans of all stripes.

 

No matter what your church background, let me encourage you not to settle for anything less than a gospel of both of grace and power. Jesus modeled it, Jesus commanded it, and Jesus purchased it with his blood. We cannot represent Jesus (re-present) on the earth without the power he himself displayed.

 

Additionally, most of the deliverance and the healings referenced in the gospels were expressions of God’s compassion for the plight of men rather than an attempt on the part of Jesus to prove who he was. How often did he tell someone he had just healed not to tell anyone? To fail in the exercise of power today is to crimp the compassion that Jesus still wants to express through his church. When we do not pursue all the gifts of the Spirit and the power of the kingdom of heaven, we not only fail ourselves but also Jesus and those who need his transforming touch. Not just words, but power. Blessings in Him today.

 

 

We fight two battles over the same issue or problem. The initial battle, to get free; and the second battle, to stay free. (Graham Cooke, Qualities of a Spiritual Warrior, p.83, Brilliant Book House)

 

It’s amazing how many Christians get free from some bondage, only to loose it again in a week or two. When they do, they decide that nothing really happened initially. In their mind, God’s “divine weapons” did not work for them, so they default back to a pre-spiritual warfare mindset and a passive approach to faith and overcoming issues.

 

A number of believers receive freedom through the ministry of other believers but then loose it shortly. The reason is that very few believers have been taught how to fight. Very few are aware of the authority that they have been given. Very few confront and defeat the enemy when their world is crumbling under his attack. Very few even think in terms of spiritual attack. Instead they think that God is punishing them or ignoring their pain that comes from bad luck or victimization by bad people. Many “defeated” Christians simply take on a victim’s mentality and resent God for not protecting them or blessing them when they have been commanded to fight against the enemy.

 

Notice the language of the following scriptures:

 

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. (2 Cor. 10:3-4)

 

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God… (Eph.6:10-13, ESV)

 

I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. (Col.2:1)

 

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith ….. (1 Pet.5:8-9)

 

Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. (Heb.10:32)

 

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:19-20)

 

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (Ja.4:7)

 

These verses contain the language of warfare – war, weapons, struggle, resistance, trample, overcome, suffer, contest, wrestle, demolish, strongholds, stand your ground, etc. Although the ultimate victory has been won and Satan’s legal right to own and dominate believers has been taken away, the enemy still wages an illegal war against God’s people.

 

He cannot snatch away our salvation but he can harass and afflict us so that we are distracted and ineffective in our assigned mission. We don’t fight to win the victory but to enforce it and most often we have to enforce it in our own lives with the truth of who we are and what Jesus has done. The first volley of any battle must be the declaration of truth over the enemy’s lies followed byn the exercise of faith and authority.

 

The number of believers that are afflicted by demons without recognizing that they are under spiritual attack or without having any idea what to do about it is significant. The freedom that these believers often experience through the declaration of truth and the exercise of our authority in Christ typically astounds them. But they must learn how to wield their own authority in order to maintain their freedom. The enemy will not give up territory without a few attempts to reclaim it.

 

I believe that every church in America needs some level of ministry available to help believers find freedom and equip them to keep it while helping others find freedom as well.   Even if it is just a few individuals or couples in a congregation who know who they are in Christ and who have experience in a few facets of spiritual welfare, the difference they can make over several years can be exponentially significant.

 

Declarations of truth, intercessory prayer, inner healing, deliverance, breaking curses, etc. are all divine weapons that need to be in the arsenal of every congregation and every mature believer. The goal of these ministries must not be to minister deliverance and healing only, but to teach the individuals they minister to how to fight with an expectation that they will maintain their freedom and help others do the same. The church has that mindset in evangelism. After we bring someone to Christ, we believe that they then know enough to lead someone else to Christ and we encourage them to do so. Most churches offer classes to further equip their members in a simple approach to evangelism. We should have the same mindset concerning spiritual warfare.

 

Even in charismatic churches, those who minister healing and deliverance are often seen as a few elite that everyone comes to for ministry. But every believer walks in the authority of Christ and every believer will have to face the enemy. Some may have more experience than others, but everyone should be equipped for the day-to-day battles that come with living in enemy territory.

I’ve always been fascinated by the focus of Jesus. His reference point for life was not found in the natural realm but in the spiritual. He didn’t make decisions based on natural logic but rather spiritual logic and those are diametrically opposed. The world says that the first shall be first and the last is a loser. But in the spiritual realm, the first shall be last and the last shall be first. In the natural realm, the rich and powerful will be remembered and venerated but in the spiritual realm, the servant of all will be considered the greatest. In the natural realm, the narcissist and the self-indulgent will get ahead but in the spiritual realm, he who gives up his life will save it. In the natural realm resources are finite. In the spiritual realm there is no lack. In the natural realm raw power and aggression get their way but in the spiritual realm the Spirit of God always carries the day. Jesus always lived by kingdom principles with the kingdom of heaven as his reference point.

 

The church in the past century has faithfully taught the gospel of Jesus Christ and has defined it as the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins – and that is definitely good news. But it is more than that. Jesus taught an amplified version of that gospel which was called the good news of the kingdom of God. John the Baptist preached that the kingdom of heaven was near (Mt.3:2) which is a phrase synonymous with the kingdom of God. Jesus preached over and over the good news of the kingdom of God. The good news was that the kingdom was suddenly within reach for those who would believe. After his resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days on earth showing himself to many people and talking about the most needed things. Luke tells us, “After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3).

 

The gospel or good news of Jesus is that he died for our sins. But there is more. His death, burial, and resurrection not only purchased forgiveness but also opened up the kingdom of God to us and made us citizens of heaven now. Jesus even taught us to pray daily about the Kingdom. “They kingdom come, they will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” So what exactly is the kingdom of God?

 

The definition of the kingdom is the “king’s domain.”  It is the rule and reign of God and heaven is heaven because God’s will for his people is expressed perfectly there. When we think of heaven we usually think of majesty, joy, peace, eternal life, perfect health, lack of want, overwhelming love, angelic beings, etc. Those things are expressions of who God is and his will for his people. Jesus taught us to pray that experience down to earth – for God’s will to be done on earth as it is done in heaven.

 

Many believers agree with that prayer but assume that it refers to the millennial reign of Jesus or to a restored earth after the final judgment. Jesus, however, clearly taught that an experience of heaven is available now. “But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you” (Lk.11:20). Both Jesus and John the Baptist declared over and over that the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven was near. They didn’t mean that the kingdom was near in the sense of “coming soon,” but rather that it was within reach of those who believed. In heaven there is no demonic affliction, no disease, no death, no bitterness, no fear, no turmoil, and no lack.

 

Jesus declared that, by faith, we can touch heaven now. Two essential qualities of the kingdom are love and power. God is both love and ultimate power. Both of those permeate the kingdom. The truth is that every believer needs both in his or her life now – the love of God and the power of God. Both are available through Jesus and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The love of God alleviates fear, bitterness, sorrow, anguish, rejection, and turmoil. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, etc. The power of God can set us free from the demonic, sickness, poverty, and every form of bondage. Those things are available now. That is God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

 

If we live with our hearts and minds anchored in heaven as Jesus did, then we can anticipate the provision and protection of heaven in our lives. When Jesus was faced with feeding 5000 men plus even more women and children with only a few loaves of bread and a few fish, he wasn’t dismayed. The power and provision of heaven had come to earth and he was confident that he could draw on that reality to get the job done. By faith, heaven was expressed on earth. Every person had plenty to eat with twelve baskets full of bread and fish left over. God’s love approved of the provision and his power provided it.

 

Today we have the same God with the same love and the same power and it is available to those who believe. As we count on both, heaven comes to earth. Most Christians believe in the love of God but are uncertain about the power of God in their lives. However, from Genesis to Revelation, it is clear that God desires to express both in the lives of his people. If I love you, but have no power, I can sympathize with your dilemma and even weep with you but I cannot help you. If I have power but no love, I won’t care to help unless it increases my power. It takes both for good outcomes. Great love coupled with great power is the ticket out of every dilemma.

 

Power directed by love is the mark of the kingdom of God. Both are there for you today. In whatever circumstance you find yourself, God is willing and able to provide your solution. God is the same – yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus modeled the reality of the kingdom of God on earth. He died so that we might possess the kingdom. It is time for the church to anchor its thoughts and expectations in heaven rather than the natural world. It is time for each of us to do the same. Ask for it, expect it and wait for the love and power of heaven to be expressed in your life today. Blessings in Him!

 

Over the years, I have discovered that anyone who begins to press into the power of God will garner his or her share of criticism and suspicion. Most believers like a tame God and a Holy Spirit who always colors inside the lines. We want God to act in predictable ways so that we can order our lives based on past performance and so that God makes no unexpected demands on our faith or obedience.

 

When you begin to press into the power of God, things can get unpredictable. That makes you unpredictable and a source of discomfort to all those who don’t want God “acting up.” Miracles put a demand on our faith. First of all, the demand is expressed in terms of whether we believe that God is a God of present-day miracles or not. The second demand that miracles make is expressed in terms of whether we have faith to join God in those miracles or not.

 

Living with an expectation of miracles or, at least a hope for miracles, is both exciting and challenging. It is exciting when we see God move. It brings the Bible to life and our faith is confirmed experientially. If we have seen God move in response to our prayers or declarations, we feel affirmed and are excited by that partnership. The challenge comes when we don’t see God move as we expected. Then the questions flood in. Why was our friend not healed? Why did we see no deliverance when we were certain a demonic presence was infecting the person to whom we ministered? Why is the man we’ve been praying for still unemployed? Why is our son or daughter still addicted when we have done all the right things? When we don’t see the manifestation of God, we can struggle with our own faith, our own sense of “being okay” with God, and our own understanding of how God works.

 

Believe me, life was easier when I was a cessationist. When I believed that God no longer moved in miracles and that he essentially did whatever he wanted to do regardless of my input, life was easier. Live a decent life, go to church, pray for the children in war-torn Africa, give a little to missions, serve a little, then die and trust Jesus to take you to heaven. I felt little responsibility for God’s purposes on the earth and I never had to struggle with the theological questions surrounding the miracles of God. When I believed that God only spoke through the Bible, I never had to struggle with discerning his voice from my own or the enemy’s voice.

 

When you start pressing in to the power of God and asking others to do so with you, you get push back. Suddenly God is not so predictable. Suddenly, men and women have to wrestle with questions of faith and their view of God that were never unearthed before. Suddenly, they become responsible for most of what God wants to do on the earth. Suddenly, you are asking them to step into unfamiliar territory. They push back…at least emotionally. Often that push back will come in the form of criticism, suspicion, and even accusation. The enemy will fuel that criticism, trying to discourage your walk into greater realms of the Kingdom.

 

You will most likely be told you are being deceived; that you are spiritually arrogant; that you are rejecting sound teaching; or that you are causing division in your congregation. Friends may distance themselves from you and leadership may offer you fewer opportunities to serve. All of that may create self-doubt for you personally and cause you to question the direction you are moving. If it helps, remember that Jesus was accused of the same things – even being in league with Beelzebub.

 

Without exploring everything attached to this, I want you to consider what to do with the criticism. I like what Stephen Mansfield has to say about this and I hope it will be hopeful to you. Let me quote from Stephen’s blog.

 

One of the maxims that has helped me is from the great missionary/statesman E. Stanley Jones. He said, “My critics are the unpaid guardians of my soul.” Now, these weren’t easy words for me to hear. Jones wanted me to look fully into what my critics and my enemies said about me to see if there was any truth. Then, he wanted me to get busy changing what needed to be changed—based on the hurtful words of people who wanted to hurt me.

 

 When I heard Jones’ words, I decided to try. I wanted so badly to be an exceptional man. I began listening to what people said to me. Sometimes, they were angry. Sometimes, I heard that veiled criticism we pick up in the humor of friends. There were also the side comments from people I hardly knew. Once in a while there was kind, direct, hard-hitting correction from someone who wanted to help me.

 

I got in the habit of writing down the core of each bit of criticism I received, and then I would write what today they would call an action statement from it. I don’t want to give you the wrong impression. It wasn’t as though I was constantly criticized. I also hadn’t descended into some type of self-abuse that had me addicted to the pain of harsh words. Instead, I had simply come to accept three possibilities for any harsh words said about me. First, they weren’t true and needed to be discarded. Second, they weren’t true but needed to be addressed. Third, they had some truth in them that could help me be a better man. The benefits of thinking like this changed my life.

 

Hearing criticism is hard but sometimes God speaks to us even though our enemies. If we are to move in the greater things of the kingdom we must guard our hearts and humble ourselves before the Lord. Consider Stephen’s approach and the wise sayings of Proverbs. “Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning” (Pr.9:8-9).   If you chafe at criticism, you might also consider Proverbs 3:11-12, 10:17, 12:1, 13:8, 15:12, 15:32; 27:6).

 

Don’t worry, if you are doing anything noteworthy in the Kingdom of God, criticism will come your way. View it as a tool God will use to deepen your character and guard your heart. Discard what is unjust and receive what the Holy Spirit confirms. Like a ship sailing across vast waters being pushed by winds and currents, our path will need constant correction. Welcome it, even if you don’t enjoy it. It will bear great fruit in your life. Be blessed today.

 

 

 

 

 

Sometimes you have books on your shelves because they are great reads and you plan to read them from cover to cover again some day. At other times, you have books that you read once and now they function as reference books. Those books have sections you refer to for reminders or for re-sharpening your thoughts in certain areas of life or faith. One of those books for me is Deliverance from Evil Spirits by Francis MacNutt. He takes a little more academic approach to the subject than most books on deliverance but it is worth the read theologically and practically. He is a former Catholic priest so his perspectives are interesting in that regard but he teaches and ministers healing and deliverance to churches around the world and across the board.

 

I like what he has to say about evangelism. “The Gospel is not meant merely to teach doctrine, but necessarily includes the power to free, save and to heal. After preaching in thirty countries, I believe that peoples of every culture are willing to hear the message of Christ’s salvation. Whenever we preach that God, in love, sent his son, Jesus Christ, to free the human race from sin and evil, people will respond eagerly. In the days when I taught homiletics in seminary, I thought the preacher’s problem was to figure out how to make the Gospel relevant to the needs of contemporary people. Now, I realize the Gospel is in itself relevant, that it does appeal. But I was not preaching the Gospel fully because I did not fully understand the need for power to heal and free people from evil spirits…Only when we are able to free the oppressed and heal those suffering from the curse of sickness can we really preach Christ’s basic message: The Kingdom of God is at hand and the kingdom of Satan is being destroyed” (p. 66).

 

I myself have come to believe that a partial gospel is no gospel at all. Biblically, salvation is not just the forgiveness of sin but is closer to the idea of Shalom or peace in the Hebrew language. Shalom includes everything needed for a blessed life: absence of conflict, flourishing relationships, health, prosperity, protection, a sound mind…and more. Jesus promised his followers an “abundant life.” That carries the flavor of Shalom and abundance is more that just the forgiveness of sins. If my sins are forgiven but I am still oppressed and tormented by demons or suffering at the hands of some debilitating disease then the abundant life seems fairly impoverished.

 

Often we point to the glory of someone enduring sickness or disability while still maintaining their love for God and still praising Him as a purifying and sanctifying grace from heaven. I agree that their ability to endure and praise is a grace from God but we need to be careful not to declare that the sickness or disability itself is a grace or a gift from God.

 

Illness, pain, tragedy, birth defects, and demons are not from God. They are a result of sin, which has never been God’s will. They are a result of a distorted universe that was also twisted by Adam’s sin. Adam’s sin and the resulting curse was the work of Satan. John tell us that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and so we see Jesus break the power of sin, restore our relationship with the Father, heal the sick, remedy disabilities, raise the dead and drive away demons.

 

Jesus and his followers always preached the kingdom and then demonstrated it or they demonstrated the kingdom and then preached it. They always did both. Power without forgiveness will simply send a healthy man to hell while forgiveness without power leaves a saved man tormented. Paul tried only persuasive words (making the Gospel relevant) when he preached on Mars Hill in Athens. If you check Acts 17, the results were very disappointing. Then he moved on to Corinth where he later confessed, “When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power” (I Cor. 2:1-5).

 

After Mars Hill, Paul reconsidered his strategy and determined that the simple message of grace and forgiveness coupled with a demonstration of God’s grace through power was the way to go. After all, that had been the strategy of Jesus in his own ministry as well as the one he commanded when he sent out the twelve and the seventy-two to preach, heal, and cast out demons. We would do well to follow that pattern whether we are preaching to thousands or to one. Even Paul had to be reminded.

 

I need reminders to keep it simple and stay on point. I need reminders to pray for boldness to share the gospel but also for an anointing to demonstrate power not just for me but for my church and the church universal. You really can’t improve on Jesus. That’s why I like to look back at books I have often looked at before because the yellow highlighted sections call me back to things I need to be reminded of. I encourage you to go back and look at the yellow highlights and notes scribbled in the margins as well. Blessings today in all you do.
