Carrying a Cross

When you read early Christian writings there is always a great deal of emphasis on Christ’s admonition to take up our cross daily in order to follow him. The theology of the cross is that God uses hardship to conform us to Jesus and to teach us to make him our source of strength and supply.  In America, where comfort and plenty have defined many lives, the idea of taking up our cross is rarely proclaimed and is even a bit offensive if we are honest. In some corners of the kingdom, a prosperity gospel has been preached which suggests that material abundance and ease are God’s will for his people on earth and proof of his favor. Preachers of that gospel tend to live on lavish estates and raise money for twenty-six passenger jets to fly around the globe preaching to the poor.

 

I’m not opposed to believers making a great living. It is believers with means whom God can use to fund the kingdom here on earth and actually care for the poor. What I question, even in my own life, is how much I have bought into the notion that sacrificial living is no longer an essential element in pleasing God and drawing close to him.  In fact, American believers tend to see hardship in our lives as proof that somehow God is displeased with us.  If that were the case, then Jesus and those who first followed him must have been very displeasing to God. I am reminded of David’s words when he said, “I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offering that cost me nothing” (2 Sam.24:24).

 

Taking up our cross daily is not necessarily a call to poverty or persecution.  It is, however, a call to setting our personal agenda aside each day while we genuinely seek God’s agenda for us.  It is saying “No” to the natural man who demands to have his way, demands to be treated with respect, demands his rights, demands to be first, demands to be given the seat of honor, refuses to submit to anyone, and who is always self-focused and concerned about his comfort, his success, and his well-being.

 

The truth is that most of our pain and discomfort in life comes from our self-focus. It is that focus that measures every interaction to see if we were given due deference.  It notices every ache and pain in our body and keeps score in every relationship.  It takes offense, issues judgments, justifies our own shortcomings and rings the “victim” alarm every time we feel that life hasn’t been fair. Our self-focus keeps pulling the scab off of our own wounds as we constantly rehearse the scenes where those wounds were inflicted and keeps Jesus at bay because we feel such a need to protect ourselves by being in control.

 

Taking up our cross daily puts the focus on Jesus and others, rather than ourselves.  It actually reduces our pain even though we believe our pain would increase. It is something, I believe, that only the Holy Spirit can do in us, but won’t due without our constant permission. We all want to be filled with the Spirit but if we are filled with self, there is little room for the Spirit to move and work.

 

In a culture that promotes self-love, attending to our needs first, and entitlement it is difficult to take up our cross.  We would rather pay someone else to carry our cross for us. Unfortunately, that task cannot be outsourced.  The paradox, of course, is that the key to abundant living is dying to our own demands. The key to freedom is surrendering to Jesus…not just the parts we don’t care about but everything. I believe it is also a key to greater anointing and power because when we carry our cross, we will steward those things as Jesus would, rather than for our own affirmation. I need to consider this reality in my own life today.  You might need to as well.

 

 

 

I am just beginning a series on knowing who we are in Christ. An accurate sense of our self-image or our identity is a critical element in our walk with Christ.  God has gone to great lengths to reveal who we are in his Son and so that knowledge must be essential. The very first thing God reveals about us in his written word is that we are made in the image of God.

 

As Genesis unfolds, we soon discover that God not only had a burning desire to create a universe but, at least on one planet, he had a desire to create living beings made in his own image. Since God is love (1 Jn.4:8), I believe his very nature prompted him to create man so that he could multiply his expressions of love and receive love as well. A mother’s yearnings to have children must be slightly akin to the yearning that God felt to create us.

 

I must admit that the idea of being made in the image of God is a bit mind-boggling. Theologians have debated exactly what that means for millennia.  Whatever it means to be made in God’s image, it certainly means that we have enough characteristics in common with the Creator to communicate with him, to give and receive love from him, for his Spirit to take up residence within us, for deity to put on flesh and live as one of us, to think as the Father thinks, and to be called his children and his friends …not his pets.

 

The Psalmist declared, “What is man that you are mindful of him…you made him just a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor” (Ps.8:4-5). Of all creation, including powerful and majestic angels, only man is said to bemade in God’s image. Scripture implies that we have even greater standing in heaven than his awe-inspiring angels. Although we were made a little lower than the heavenly beings, Paul reveals that those of us who are in Christ will actually sit in judgment over angels (I Cor. 6:3).  In addition, the writer of Hebrews tells us that the angels were created to minister to or serve those who will inherit salvation (Heb.1:14). That includes you.

 

This blog will come out on Christmas Day.  It is a day for reflecting on the amazing truth that God has made us in his own image and, in doing so, values each of us enough to give us the gift of his Son, wrapped in flesh and destined to be a sacrifice. We tend to view Christmas through the lens of Hallmark movies and Christmas cards that depict the nativity as clean, bright, and serene. You know… a peaceful Mary and Joseph with contented cows lowing in the manger and antiseptic, bright sheep bleating in the background.  The shepherds are there along with the three wise men in clean, royal robes looking as they just caught a limo from the Bethlehem Hilton.  Our view of the birth of Jesus is quite sanitized.  As we do that, the cost of God, putting on flesh and being born to a virgin in a small village in Israel is often overlooked.

 

The cost of his entry into this world began nine months earlier. It began with fearful encounters with angels who had to calm Mary and encourage Joseph.  The birth of the great King began with scandal as this unwed virgin first had to break the news to her fiancé that she was pregnant and later face her family and friends who were “surprised” at how quickly she became pregnant after a hurried wedding.  Joseph’s first response was a plan to divorce her since she had clearly violated her vows with him.  It took the visitation of an angel in a dream to convince him that she might have been telling the truth when she shared her outlandish story of being impregnated by the Holy Spirit. I suspect Joseph questioned his dream from time to time in the following years that they were married. In her ninth month, Joseph was called from Galilee to Bethlehem to register in a census. It seems that things back home must not have been that good for her to feel compelled to take that journey with her husband.  Most probably, the birth of Christ was in Spring rather than the winter since shepherds would not be in the fields at night with their sheep, except in the lambing season of March and April.  Still it was a hard trip and even a dangerous trip for the little couple  nine months pregnant.  There is no evidence that any family members from Nazareth travelled with them, which again suggests that the pregnancy of Mary had not been celebrated back home.  After the birth, they remained in Bethlehem instead of returning to their hometown which again points at a scandal back home that they did not want to try to explain away once more.

 

The wise men showed up two years after the birth, when they had first seen the “King’s star.”  Mary and Joseph were in a home in Bethlehem by then, not a stable. The wise men’s visit with Herod was not very wise and their audience with him set in motion the death of many innocent Hebrew boys as a result.  Before Herod acted to protect his throne from the threat of this rival king, Joseph was warned in a dream to pull up stakes and disappear into the nation of Egypt.   God had funded the trip with gold, frankincense, and myrrh but they were still a hunted couple on the run in a foreign land where Hebrews were not particularly welcome.  There was more, but I want you to think of the cost of God coming into this world on our behalf… even on the front end. Thirty years later, the ultimate price would be paid for our ransom but this who entry into the world of man came at a great cost to one who had sat on a throne in glory hearing only his praises sung by angles before entering into a world of insult, danger, poverty, and pain.

 

Jesus not only died for you, but was born for you. Born into scandal he became a political refugee before his second birthday and his parents feared discovery by Herod for years after his birth.  Mary and Joseph did return to Nazareth after their stint in Egypt, but I’m certain that questions still remained about Mary’s pregnancy, the birth of this child, and where they had been for two years.  First century Palestine was not as relaxed about pregnancy outside of marriage as we are.

 

The only conclusion is that you are of amazing and extreme value in the eyes of God. Made in his image might mean many things, but it certainly means that you have great significance, even greater than the angels themselves. Not only did God make you, but he redeemed you even after we, as a race, had rebelled against the king.  So, this Christmas celebrate Jesus, but also celebrate who you are in him…crowned with glory and honor and made just a little lower than the heavenly beings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

PSALM 100

A Psalm for Thanksgiving.

 

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing. Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving  and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the Lord is good; His loving kindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations.

 

Americans celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday. My guess is that few really took time away from cooking, early Black Friday shopping, and football to truly give thanks to the Lord for His blessings. This psalm of David reminds us of the power and the promptings for giving thanks. It is written in the context of the tabernacle since the temple had not yet been built in the days of David and may be instructive to us as believers who should make every day a day of thanksgiving.

 

The tabernacle, and later the temple, was a place where God could dwell among his people without his presence devastating them. Both God and his people knew that he did not dwell in tents or buildings made by man but somehow a part of his presence rested in the Holy of Holies so that representatives of the people could come before him for direction, provision, and spiritual cleansing.

 

A key verse in Psalm 100 declares that we should enter His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. This language symbolizes the act of drawing close to the Father. It symbolizes entering the gate of the tabernacle and moving into the courts or open places of the tabernacle as they progressed toward the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. Of course, only the high priest could enter that room but the people could move into the courts where they could praise the Lord and seek his blessings.

 

Notice that “thanksgiving” gained entrance into courts where sacrifices, praise, and prayer could be offered. A thankful heart adjusts our mind so that we can come before the Lord with a perspective that opens the gates of heaven to us. David invites us, as God’s people, to shout joyfully, serve with gladness, and sing with joy before Him. That doesn’t happen unless we recognized the goodness of God and the blessings of God in our lives.

 

It is the recognition of God’s goodness and presence in our lives that creates a heart of thanksgiving, which then produces joy and gladness. It is the recognition that God is our shepherd and that we are his people that sets our compass toward him. As our shepherd he is committed to protect us, care for us, lead us, and provide for us. We need to constantly sense those things in our lives as expressions of his love for us so that thanksgiving and joy mark our lives.

 

That is not to say that we never struggle, never experience loss, never wither under the attacks of the enemy, or never wonder where our shepherd is on occasion. We live in enemy territory, we wander away from the flock at times, and we long for a peace and sense of security that will not be fully ours until we are home with Him. And yet, in the midst of these struggles God’s grace and expressions of love are still there if we look for them. In the 23rd Psalm, David declared that God prepared a table for him in the midst of his enemies. David knew hardship, betrayal, loss, and the constant threat of death – yet he still saw the hand of God caring for him in the midst of all that. He still saw expressions of God’s love and faithfulness while hiding out in caves rather than sitting in a palace.

 

It is in those moments that we need a heart of thanksgiving more than ever. Thanksgiving opens the door to a closer walk with God and a heavenly perspective that produces more faith and even peace in the chaos of life on a fallen planet. Several years ago, I heard Bill Johnson say that we need to focus on what God has done for us rather than what he has not yet done for us. That thought has really stuck with me and is, I believe, the key to thanksgiving which is the very thing that keeps our hearts navigating toward God. So…if all the celebrations got in the way yesterday, today is just as good a day for some serious thanksgiving. Be blessed and notice your blessings even in the dark moments of life.

 

I want to continue to share some thoughts on healing because I believe it is absolutely part of our birthright for those born into the kingdom of God. I believe it is something that Jesus purchased on the cross for every believer. Like many things in the kingdom it is part of our inheritance but it is activated in our lives by faith. As believers it is our birthright to be able to come confidently before the throne of grace in times of need and expect help (See Heb.4:16). In other words, as children of God it is our right to ask the Father for help and expect it. It is our right to pray and expect answers but if we have no faith we either will not pray or if we do pray we will ask with little expectation and receive little. Healing is absolutely ours but it must come by faith and many of us grew up in churches that produced little to no faith for that. Because of that, we need to keep building our faith in God’s desire to heal from the Word rather than from experience or our lack of experience.

 

Healing comes to us through the cross just as forgiveness comes. The Psalms declared much of the gospel in advance through the inspiration of the Spirit – detailed prophecies regarding the crucifixion flow from the (See Ps. 22), hints of the resurrection (Ps.16:10), and clear declarations of grace based on the sacrifice of Jesus (32:1-2). In addition, David declared, “God forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases (Ps.103:2-3). God only forgives our sins on the basis of the blood of Jesus. This scripture also declares that healing comes to us on the same basis. If the blood of Christ buys us forgiveness then it also buys us healing. If his blood does not buy us all healing from all disease then it does not buy us all forgiveness from all sins.

 

This truth is demonstrated time and again in the gospels. Jesus preached forgiveness and then healed. That was the proclamation of the kingdom – forgiveness of sin and healing of disease and infirmities. Notice how the two were tied together in the healing of the paralytic in Matthew’s gospel.

 

Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” Then he said to the paralytic, “Get up, take your mat and go home” (Mt.9:5-6).

 

When Jesus forgave the man’s sins initially the Pharisees were indignant that a “man” would dare to forgive sin. But Jesus went on to prove his authority to forgive sin by healing the man. The proof was imbedded in the truth that death and the disease that eventually leads to death entered the world through sin. Those who live a life unforgiven are bound under death and disease. For those who are forgiven and are in Christ, premature death and disease are not inescapable because Jesus has set us free from the curse of the law (See Gal.3:13). The forgiveness of sin opens the door for healing.

 

Before the New Covenant, the Old Testament sacrifices as well as Passover opened the door to healing. Many sacrifices were offered in the temple that promised healing after blood had been shed. When Israel left Egypt the night after Passover the scriptures say there was not one lame person among them which is highly unlikely for the slave class. Healing had occurred under the blood of a lamb that pointed ahead to the blood of The Lamb. Numerous other examples tie healing to a blessing that comes after sins have been covered by the blood of the Savior. In addition we are simply told that “by his stripes (or wounds) we are healed (Isa. 53:5; 1 Pet.2:24) Isaiah prophesied, “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. (Isa.53:4). The word “infirmities” is a Hebrew word that is translated “sickness” or “illness” nearly every other place it is used in the Old Testament and should be translated in that way in Isaiah’s prophecy.

 

We can say with great assurance that the Bible teaches that the blood of Jesus not only purchased forgiveness for all who receive his as Lord but also healing for all who can receive that by faith. In Monday’s blog, I want to add one more layer to this issue by looking at the names of God and how they point to the cross as well. Again, before we can begin to ask for healing or command healing with faith, we must believe that scripture teaches that healing is for all those who are in Christ and for others God wants to draw to Christ by his grace. In the kingdom, healing should be the rule rather than the exception. Keep reflecting on God’s heart, the cross, and the grace of God who always wants what is best for his children.

Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. (1 Chr.16:8)

 

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 35 Cry out, “Save us, O God our Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise.” (1 Chr.16:34-35)

 

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. (Ps.28:7)

 

I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. (Psm.69:30)

 

Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. (Ps.95:2-3)

 

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Ps.100:4-5)

 

I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. (Ps.118:21)

 

But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the Lord.” (Jonah 2:9)

 

In that day you will say: “Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. (Isa. 12:4-5)

 

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph.5:19-20)

 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil.4:6-7)

 

Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. (Col.1:12-13)

 

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior. (1 Tim.2:1-3)

 

On this Thanksgiving weekend we should not forget that every day should be a day of thanksgiving for God’s people.  We are both commanded and encouraged to give thanks and the practice of giving thanks is firmly woven throughout the Bible. Since the flesh always pushes us toward self-sufficiency it’s easy to begin to take blessings for granted and to act as if we are the cause of every good thing in our own lives.  The practice of giving thanks accurately reminds us that every good and perfect gift is from the Father and that what we have is not to be possessed but to be stewarded.

 

Secondly, giving thanks is a form of praise and worship because it acknowledges the goodness, the grace and the provision of God that is freely given to us by our heavenly Father.  Under the Old Covenant, animals were sacrificed as “thank offerings” in recognition of God’s blessings in a person’s life.  Sacrifices are worship and so giving thanks is an essential form of praise and worship.

 

We are also told that when we pray with thanksgiving the peace of God will guard our hearts.  Peace comes because as we give thanks we fellowship with the giver of all good things. Being in the presence of God brings peace.  Our giving of thanks also reminds us that God has been faithful in answering prayers and meeting our essential needs in the past and, since he is unchanging, we can expect the same in the future.  When David was preparing himself to face Goliath, he declared that God had already delivered him from a lion and a bear that had attacked his sheep.  Faith operated on the assumption that God would continue to be with David whenever he was in danger. Thanksgiving reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past so that we can rest in the faith that God will also meet our needs in the future. That assurance brings peace.

 

Thanksgiving is also a great spiritual weapon because it declares the goodness and faithfulness of God over our lives.  Satan is always whispering the lies that God will not be there for us when we need him or that God is stingy with his blessings.  He constantly assails the character of God in an effort to undermine our belief in his power, goodness, and faithfulness.  A life that takes note of every blessing and every answered prayer from the Father through giving thanks pushes back against the lies of the enemy.

Additionally, relationships flourish when individuals  thank one another for even the small gifts and acts of service that loving people give  one another.  Even those who love unconditionally like a “thank you” from those they love because they know then that their gift was enjoyed.  It is not so different with God.  If we want our relationship with him to flourish, abundant “thank you’s” will be in order.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday.  My wife Susan and I were blessed with the presence of family, fun, and too much food. That doesn’t sound very spiritual but remember that God loves a good party. I’m certain the he was present at many homes yesterday where people loved God, loved one another, and gave thanks.  That sounds a little bit like heaven.  The challenge is to carry that spirit with us year round because our God is a God worthy of praise and thanksgiving every day.  Be blessed!
